As the space we arguably spend the most time in, bedrooms are our sanctuaries. What’s one way to make your room as comfortable as can be? Cozy bedding! Teeing up a complete bedding suite can be a confusing undertaking, however. From top and flat sheets to decorative pillows, there’s a lot to consider. To help, we’re breaking down the different components of master bedroom bedding and showing you how to style them right.

Start with Sheets

Fitted sheets have elasticated corners designed to cover and protect the mattress. Flat sheets, also known as top sheets, are usually placed on top of the fitted sheet, but beneath the duvet. Because flat sheets are intended to keep your duvet covers protected from contact with your skin they’re meant to be washed more regularly than your duvet.

Next, think about your sheets’ construction material. Cotton sheets, the most common choice for bedding, is soft and breathable — useful for balmy summer nights — but they do wrinkle easily. Egyptian cotton sheets are the highest quality bedding on the market, and although supple, they’re pricey.

Fine linen is also a great bedding choice. High-quality French linen and Belgian linen are temperature regulating, easy to care for, and get softer with every wash. Costlier than their cotton counterparts, linen can pill and feels rough until natural wear eventually softens it.

Consider silk sheets for a lush, supremely soft bedding set. Silk is anti-wrinkle, strong, yet lightweight, and smooth. However, silk requires hand-washing, a turn-off for those who already dislike laundry.

When picking out sheets, consider the region where you live. Natural-toned linen bedding breathes in the heat — perfect for hot, beachside environments. Cotton sateen sheets, on the other hand, will keep you consistently cozy if you live in a cooler climate.

Layer in a Duvet or Comforter

While duvets come with an insert and cover, comforters are one piece of quilted bedding. Comforters are therefore thicker than duvets and generally wear a higher price tag. No matter which you choose, the top layer of your bedding is generally the star of the show. Tie in other colors in your room with a multi-hued duvet, or keep it simple with a solid duvet. You also can’t go wrong with a classic, puffy white down comforter. Give it some pizzazz with accessories like pillows or throws.

Keep Warm with Quilts and Blankets

Now, it’s time to get cozy! Whether you live in a cooler climate or simply love a snug bed, layer on a quilt or a couple of blankets and throws. Not only will these provide an extra layer of warmth, but they’ll also provide additional texture in a bedroom. Opt for a woven or stitched quilt or coverlet to bring more tactility to your space. Thick cotton yarn throws or fuzzy blankets similarly make a room feel more alive. Plus, if you’re going for a neutral, no-frills bedspread, using fun quilts and blankets is an easy way to inject personality and color to your space. A scrappy, patchwork quilt will give off on-trend coastal grandmother vibes, while a light, cashmere throw will provide a polished touch.

Time For Some Pillow Talk

Lastly, pile on the pillows! Like quilts and throws, pillows provide pops of color and texture. A medley of pillows tucked into pillowcases of different shapes and sizes can create a lush-looking bedding suite. While it’s fun to play with colors in an interior, it’s admittedly high-stakes. An easy work-around? Use pillows as an opportunity to play with patterns and color, but on a much smaller scale! Also, toy around with shape and scale. Intermingling square Euro shams, cylindrical bolster pillows, or rectangle lumbar pillows is a great way to add design intrigue to a bed.
