Looking to take your kitchen to new heights? A beautiful set of bar stools is likely in order. While bar stools are often overlooked as investment pieces, there are a few easier ways to add both character and function. Which is all to say — it’s worth asking yourself a few questions prior to purchasing a set. Here are five questions that should be on every bar stool buyer’s checklist!

1. What’s Your Magic Number?

Don’t understaff your kitchen island or peninsula. Take an honest assessment of how many stools you need to fill your allotted bar space. Stools that are spaced too far apart can result in a visual imbalance. For most counters, you can take the total length of your counter and divide by 30 to get the number of counter stools (i.e. a 90″ counter can comfortably fit 3 stools).

2. How High is your Counter?

Measure your counter to decide if bar stools or counter stools are the right height for you. Have a counter that clocks in between 35″ to 37”? Go for counter stools.  Have a counter that’s 38” to 42”? Opt for bar stools.

3. What’s Your Take on Backs?

While there’s a lot of chatter around backs, we like to keep it simple: will you be spending lots of time sitting on your stools? If yes, spring for a back. If no, forgo a back, if you like.

4. Thoughts on Swivel?

Many stools swivel. In traditional bar settings, a swivel feature makes it easier to get up without disturbing the patron next to you. Is that important in your kitchen? Likely not. However, swivel stools can be nice if your bar area will be abutting a dining area or living room area, as it allows guests seated on your stools to easily turn and converse with other guests seated in those other areas.
