Anna’s Agenda: Make the Most of May

Anna Brockway poses with floral arrangement in room with exposed brick

Our design-obsessed leader shares what she’s planning for the month ahead…

Kips Bay Decorator Show House
(NYC, May 2 – June 1)
This show house is always a total showstopper, and I can’t wait to see what this year’s group of designers have dreamed up! Wandering from one gorgeous room to the next is pretty much the perfect way to spend an afternoon. If you’re in New York this month it’s an absolute must-see.

LEGENDS 2017 with Nate Berkus
(Los Angeles, May 9-May 11)
Los Angeles’s La Cienega Design Quarter hosts this three day event once a year, and it is always a total blast. Keep on eye on your Insta feed for snaps from our Blogger Breakfast (now in its 2nd year!) that we’re hosting at the gorgeous Hollyhock, along with media partner California Home and Design. I am super excited to play a raucous game of Love It or Hate It with cutie Nate Berkus!

ICFF
(NYC, May 21-May 24)

I love being able to check out the coolest contemporary designs from the international design scene without risking a mean case of jet lag.

Collective Design Fair
(NYC, May 3-May 7)
This really unique event is all about giving more visibility to collectible design and art being created around the globe. It’s so special to see masterclass works (many of which I’ve been lusting over for years) alongside the work of contemporary designers.

Designs by visionary Rei Kawabo.

Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between
(NYC, May 4-September 4)
Many years ago while I was staying at the Chateau Marmont, the staff accidentally delivered to my room a stack of loose papers that belonged to Rei Kawakubo, who was staying in the room next door.  They were long, handwritten detailed notes and drawings  – a pile about 4-inches thick.  It was all in Japanese so I have no idea what they said, but the pictures!!!! It was obvious that there was so much passion and deep consideration in her work. A real view inside the mind of a creative genius. I’ll never forget it, and yes, I returned the papers to the front desk for proper delivery.
Now you can see her work in full force at the Met!

The Matisse / Diebenkorn exhibit at SFMoMa is a must.

SFMOMA’s Matisse / Diebenkorn
(San Francisco, On view through May 29)
Seeing the connection between these two genius painters underscores the way deep admiration can lead to inspiration, which can result in something completely new and incredible. This stunning show closes at the end of the month and I’ll for sure be sneaking in a second visit. The colors alone make it worth a trip!

Me with my inspiring mom!

Mother’s Day
(Sunday, May 14)
In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to say something about my mom, who inspired me with her own personal entrepreneurship. After 15 years as a full-time, stay-at-home mom who authentically loved raising her kids and creating a beautiful home, my mother up and went to law school. She became a high flying District Attorney focused on prosecuting child predators.  It was a brave and noble choice and she did this in her 40’s.  Without her as a role model, I am not sure I would have had the guts, as 42-year-old stay-at-home mom, to start Chairish. Thanks Mommy for showing me how it’s done. I love you!

In her honor, here’s a recipe for her signature cocktail – the Harry’s Bar Bellini.

The most delicious Bellini!

Harry’s Bar Bellini
1 part white peach puree, chilled
3 parts prosecco, chilled

Add the white peach puree to cold glasses and slowly pour prosecco into the glass. Gently stir just before serving.
