A comforter is a type of bedding coverlet used as the outermost layer on a bed. Generally, comforters are filled with soft materials such as down, feathers, or synthetic fibers. Because comforters not single-ply like most blankets, they tend to be heavier and thicker than most blankets. Because of their thickness, comforters are especially popular in the winter months to provide extra comfort and warmth.

In contrast to a comforter, a blanket is a type of bedding that is usually made of lighter materials such as cotton or wool. These pieces are single-ply and not filled with anything like a comforter is. While both comforters and blankets are used for covering a bed, they are typically used differently, with comforters being used as the top layer, and blankets being used under bed’s top layer for added warmth and layering. Comforters are also generally only used on beds, while blankets can be used as decor. Blankets are frequently used thrown over the arm of a sofa or folded over the back of a chair.
