Similar to bedspreads, comforters and quilts can both be used as the top layer on a bed.
Comforters are typically filled with down, feathers, or synthetic fibers and have a single-layer construction. They tend to be fluffier and more substantial than quilts, making them a good choice for those who want a plush and luxurious bed set-up.
In contrast, quilts tend to be more casual and utilitarian. They’re made up of three stitched-together layers: a top layer of patchwork or pieced fabric, a middle layer of batting or insulation, and a bottom layer of solid fabric. Quilts can feature colorful patchwork or they can be solid in color. Since they’re not as plush as comforters, quilts are best used in bedrooms where minimalist or utilitarian style is the design goal.
In some cases, a quilt and duvet can be used together. A quilt can be folded at the end of a comforter-topped bed to give additional options for warmth in cooler weather.
