While office desk accessories aid in workspace organization, they also, ironically, add clutter. With limited surface space at hand, even items as small as a lamp, pen cup, or paperweight can feel double the size. So what’s the secret to pulling off an office that feels personal but not cluttered? Below, we deliver strategies for creating tidy workspaces without forgoing any personality.

Interchange Your Illumination

Get smart! One of the easiest ways to dress up your desk without creating clutter is to switch out a traditional desk lamp with a floor lamp. Another bonus: a towering floor lamp provides more dispersed lighting and helps build out a more substantial-feeling work area.

Choose Furnishings Wisely

Another obvious tip is to opt for furnishings with plenty of built-in storage. Desks with fixed drawers or shelving units not only help generate more counter space, but are opportune spots to craft a full-fledged workspace environment. Plant desk organizers — document trays, desktop carousels, pencil cups —inside your built-in caches, and, voila! You have a one-stop-shop for all things office supplies, plus plenty of desktop space.

Bet on a Ledge

If you’re really strapped for work space, consider installing hanging wall shelves. While breaking out the nail and hammer may feel like a commitment, shelves are ideal for reducing desk disorder. With a little DIY home improvement, you expand your work area, creating room for desk organizers, reference books, and even art. Not ready for the commitment of installing shelves? Attach wire baskets on nearby hooks to help stow away craft supplies, extra tech items, and other office accessories.

Roll in Room

For even more storage space, wheel in a storage caddy or rolling bar cart and station it near your desk. This auxiliary arrangement creates more than enough room for all of your office desk accessories. Outfit it with desk organizers as well as plants, sculptures, or other inspiring mementos.
