What is a console table?

A console table is a long, shallow table, generally measuring between 30 and 36 inches high. A console table is both a functional piece and a decorative piece, generally used to up the utility of narrow parts of the home such as an entryway or hallway alcove. Consoles are typically rectangular and oftentimes come outfitted with a single or double drawer. They also tend to feature open legwork, and sometimes come equipped with an open shelf below. (For the record, a tall, narrow table featuring enclosed storage beneath would generally be considered a credenza rather than a console.) Those looking for an alternative to rectangular consoles may want to consider a demilune console or table, which features an attractive half-moon shape. Many two-legged demilune consoles require being bolted to the wall, while three-legged demilune consoles can generally be supported on their own. To increase the function of console tables, they are often decorated with objects like lamps, catchall bowls, trays, or baskets.
