What is a coverlet?

A coverlet is a type of bed covering that lands somewhere on the spectrum between a quilt and a bedspread. Since a coverlet is generally quilted and made of a single layer of fabric, it is fairly different from a duvet or comforter. Coverlets are perhaps most similar to a quilt, since they have a textured surface created by stitch work. However, coverlets are not generally batted like quilts, making them more lightweight. For this reason, coverlets are typically used as either a blanket sandwiched between a sheet and the top layer of a bed, or as a decorative blanket folded at the foot of a bed. While not as common, a coverlet can also be used in lieu of a duvet or bedspread. Because a coverlet typically lacks the drape of a traditional bedspread or quilt, they lend themselves especially well to being tucked around a mattress to procure a neat, minimalist look. Historically, coverlets were made of matelassé fabric. Like matelassés, coverlets showcase a wide variety of stitching patterns, which provide endless styling options.
