What are casegoods?

Casegoods are an industry term used to describe cabinetry pieces designed for storage, like dressers, credenzas, and nightstands, although the definition can be expanded to include any item that is made from panel construction, such as a desk, console, or even a table. As a rule, casegoods are never upholstered but are instead made of hard materials like wood, glass, acrylic, or lacquer. Wicker and rattan can also be used, although not technically a “hardwood.” Discussions about case pieces often revolve around procuring high-quality ones, as case pieces are generally considered to be investment items. For wood items, joints should be expertly fused through hallmark joints like mortise and tendon or dovetail. Drawers should also be finished with smooth glides. Glass and acrylic case pieces will of course adhere to a different set of rules, but similar standards can be applied to the craftsmanship to ensure you obtain an heirloom-quality piece.
