What is a flush mount?
A flush mount is a light fixture that sits even, or flush, with the ceiling. As opposed to pendants and chandeliers, there is no drop—or airspace—between the ceiling and the top of the fixture.
Their ceiling-skimming nature makes flush mounts ideal for rooms with low ceilings, such as hallways or stairwells. Flush mounts are also smart picks for small rooms like powder rooms or walk-in closets where a pendant or chandelier would overpower. Flush mounts have traditionally been very simple in design, with their purpose often dictating that they be dome-shaped or drum-shaped. Common construction materials include glass and a reinforced cotton or linen fabric. Many flush mounts fixtures also feature metal accents in high-sheen finishes like brass or chrome. In contrast to a classic flush mount, a semi-flush mount has a semi drop, leaving airspace between the ceiling and the fixture. It is in effect, a semi-flush mount is a pendant light with an abbreviated drop.
