Inside a Coastal Home Renovated in the Aftermath of a Hurricane

After Hurricane Irma destroyed a couple’s winter home in the Florida Keys, Armina Kasprowicz of Armina Interiors stepped in to transform the outdated estate. The house was originally designed with a mix of Tuscan and French Provincial influences, but Kasprowicz thought that a fresher, lighter interior would better complement the coastal environment and improve the clients’ ability to entertain. Reigning in the design with rich neutrals and custom furnishings, the designer crafted a space that was easy to live in and stylistically inspired. Read on to discover the serene property.

For the dining room, the client craved a space that would serve for more formal entertaining. Kasprowicz selected a calming, striated wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries in keeping with the coastal theme; a round wood table with cut-out panels from Theodore Alexander is set below a bubble chandelier. The chairs surrounding the table are also from Theodore Alexander.

A relaxed, earthy environment dominates the design of the home, including the family room. A custom credenza sits beneath the television, faced by a custom sofa and armchairs. A heavy, dark wood coffee table is placed underneath the wood fan from Minka Aire.

In the living room, which resembles the family room with a formal spin, a curved coffee table from Made Goods enhances the contemporary comfort of the space; the sectional is custom.

Originally, the kitchen was dark and crowded with oversized, French Provincial-style cabinetry. Kasprowicz lightened and brightened the kitchen with a large porcelain island from Laminam, which matches the sophisticated backsplash, and she created natural contrast through custom-made wood cabinetry. The pendant lights are from Tech Lighting, and the range is from Wolf.

The kitchen opens up to the pool area, emphasizing the connection between the interior and exterior environments and creating more space for social gatherings.

The flooring here is from Unicom Starker. The faucets in the kitchen are from Kohler, and the bar stools are custom.

Another bath features rich, yellow tile from Cercan Tile in the shower and geometric floor tile from Ann Sacks. A sleek Lacava vanity complements the oval mirror above it, and the sconces are from Arteriors.

Tile was used extensively throughout the house, both for its visual appeal and for its retardancy to fire and water damage. Here, in the guest bathroom, Ann Sacks tile continues the coastal theme of the design. The vanity is from Lacava, and the wall light is from Visual Comfort. The artwork is the client's own.

A sunny aesthetic is front and center in the bedroom. The rattan Serena and Lily bed is paired with custom yellow curtains, a Bungalow 5 dresser with unique handles, and a Serena and Lily pineable table lamp to achieve a bright, coastal style. The nightstand is also from Serena and Lily.

Armina Interiors worked with the architect — Timothy James Slawson — and Keys Green Builders to raise the pool to the first level, so that the family could look out over the pool from inside the house. “So many outdoor areas in Florida are screened in,” says Kasprowicz. “It feels so caged in — I wanted the spaces outside to be open and connected with the interiors."
