Inside a Los Angeles Home for a Young Couple by Stefani Stein

For this home, interior designer Stefani Stein of Stefani Stein Inc. was asked to create comfortable spaces with a neutral palette for a young couple expecting their first child. “This design direction perfectly complimented the architecture of the 1930’s home in the Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighborhood,” says Stein. “We wanted to honor the original details such as the ribbon moulding and wainscot, but with a direction that felt fresh, age appropriate and reflective of their California casual lifestyle.” says Stein. Bringing in contemporary artwork, hand-picked fabrics and wallpapers, and adding a touch of vintage, Stein has created seamless spaces perfect for a family to grow into.

Designer Stefani Stein describes the living room as a “fresh take on traditional materials and motifs, with a California twist.” The white lacquered hexagon library table by Martin & Brockett provides the perfect counterpoint, paired with the rush chairs and floral textile; the Indian Lotus Pattern by Kristen Buckingham.

The shelving unit features finds from Stein's vintage collection, including burlwood vessels and Mid Century studio pottery. On the sofa are pillows in a Palampore pattern in Charcoal Blue on Oyster, by Bennison Fabrics, purchased from George Smith; and the Roselle pattern in Forest on Grun by Le Gracieux, purchased from Mimi London.

The room also features a vintage Van Keppel & Green chest of drawers. To the left of a pair of vintage horse bookends is the photo titled "Daybreak Luster" by Kelli Craig.

This light-filled breakfast nook features "Cloud Painting," by Sarah F. Burns from Martin & Brockett and a studio pottery vase, on the kitchen table, one of Stein's vintage finds. Both the lampshades on the lighting fixture and the chair pillows are made from men's shirting fabric.

In the bathroom is a standout Addison Cast Iron Tub by Barclay in a custom paint color to match the walls, painted in the shade Sleepy Valley by Portola Paints & Glazes. The hanging artwork is "Moment of Chinatown" by Jacob Dudley. The faucet is Kohler Purist in Polished Nickel.

In the dining room, Josephine Chairs in Pencil Stripe Linen by Serena & Lily are paired with a vintage Drexel Dining Table. The ceiling fixture is a Broomfield Hanging Shade in Brass & Leather, designed by Ralph Lauren for Circa Lighting. The wallpaper is Chinese Daisy, Jim Thompson No. 9, purchased from Kneedler Fauchere.

In this peaceful master retreat, Cole & Son Tulip Bisque Wallpaper cover the walls, and an Indian Modern rug in Beige/Blue from Lawrence of La Brea warms the floors. On the bed is a Khotan bolster pillow by Zak and Fox in Toz and the settee pillows are Holland & Sherry Savile Row Check in Alistair. Lastly, Sabin Rexford Nightstands in White Oak frame the bed. "I was immediately drawn to the bedside tables," says Stein. "The brutalist inspired geometric design perfectly juxtaposed the muted palette and sinuous lines of the wallpaper."

"It was love at first site with woodland toile pattern on the nursery walls — and the client felt the same. It was the only pattern we considered for their daughter’s nursery," says Stein. The wallpaper is Torridon Silver Grey by Mulberry Home purchased from Lee Jofa. Unique details include a Zodiac Capricorn Pillow from Jonathan Adler and a Papier Mache Finch sculpture by Artist Nancy Lee Carter, purchased through John Derian.
