From Narcissus to Dorian Gray, the desire to witness one’s own reflection has often led to disastrous outcomes. Those who never engage with their mirror image run another risk — psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan theorized that through mirorrs we can learn to associate an exterior image with the interior self. In design, a large mirror opens up a room, eroding the boundaries of smaller spaces, while also framing another perspective of the area and enclosing it within new borders. The following dining rooms rely on mirrors of all shapes and sizes that enrich our appreciation of the design, as long as we don’t look into them for too long.
