This week we’re joined by designer, Dan Mazzarini. He puts the ‘DM’ in BHDM Designs, the bicoastal interior design firm that’s earning a major buzz for its dramatic and unexpected approach to classic design principles. Dan’s personal portfolio is a global tour de force, with projects spanning from New Delhi to Waikiki. Dan’s secret to making clients happy? Weaving his chic brand of sophistication with what he calls each client’s “personal narrative.” Dan reveals more of what inspires him ahead!
Last show you binge watched?
Sadly, it’s not just one! I’ve LOVED watching Schitt’s Creek. One, it’s hysterical, and I am LIVING for Catherine O’Hara’s accent, and two, the fashion and juxtaposition of what they wear versus where they live is amazing. It’s just fun, and surprisingly heartwarming. I also recently picked a Netflix show called I’m Sorry and it’s LOL funny. Crass and naughty and well written; it just makes me laugh so hard. Which, with as crazy as things are in real life right now, feels like just what I want from my TV watching.
Where’s next on your travel bucket list?
We just got back from an amazing trip through France, but I’m always happy to go back. (Do I hear a shopping trip??) So next on the list may be Iceland! It’s close and I’ve seen some really beautiful images coming from there. I don’t know a lot about it, and in a way that’s part of the appeal— just go, explore, and get inspired without a lot of background.
Ultimate style icon?
Erica Barry from Something’s Gotta Give, and Renee Russo in Thomas Crown Affair. I know they’re both women, but man-oh-man—love them both!
Do you collect anything?
Yes, I have a collection of sketches and etchings. They’re from all over—some from Paris, some from flea markets, and some from Chairish! I like anything that has a sense of hand to it; usually gestural and sketchy, in ink or pencil. I’ve hung about 15 to 20 pieces salon-style in my kitchen in NYC.
