Wondering the right way to work wall accents into your space? Whether it’s traditional wall art like paintings or drawings, or three-dimensional wall art like sculpture or shelving, it can pay to put a few tricks into play when choosing and hanging wall accents. Here, we spotlight three tips for making your wall accents truly wow-worthy.
Size Matters
When in doubt — size up! Nine times out of ten, if a piece of art feels too small for a wall, it’s because it is. Ideally, you want a piece to feel anchored to the surrounding walls — not like it’s floating aimlessly between them. If you’re committed to the idea of placing a particular piece on a particular wall, but it feels too small, consider incorporating it into a gallery wall. Even simply stacking two paintings, whether they’re related or not, can transform a composition from feeling too small to just right.
Go Glare-Free
If you’re hanging glass or plexiglass framed wall art, consider if your hanging spot will produce a glare. Some art pieces are outfitted with glare-resistant glass, but if not, sun shining through open windows can bounce light across your art, causing a glare that prevents you from actually appreciating your art during daylight hours. In spots where glare can be an issue, opt for unframed canvas paintings or plaster or metal wall sculpture.
Make it a Mirror
Oftentimes, in the quest to procure the perfect wall decor for the living room or bedroom, we forget about the option of a wall mirror. Especially if you have a spot that feels a little too dark, consider filling it with a wall mirror. Remember: mirrors don’t have to be an average affair. There are plenty of mirrors that feel perfectly on par with art. Shop for mirrors with frames outfitted in scalloped lacquer, capiz shells, or mosaic tiles.
